The creator of GKD, Ricardo Simon’s passion for music started at a very young age, at the age of 11 he started playing the drums which later allowed him to create the band. He started creating music about 7 years ago and explains that his creative process is based on his emotions.

I allow it to come naturally and not push it so hard. I try to write what I feel and from my heart and experiences

Simon says. His inspiration comes from his parents, and he highlighted the singer Jonathan Butler that achieved so much through music despite him coming from Athlone and being 1 of 17 children.  His music allowed him to travel both locally and internationally. He had the opportunity to go to the UK (London and Oxford) as well as the Eastern Cape and the Free state. He also had the opportunity to showcase his music at the Cape Grace Hotel.

Through music I’ve had the opportunity to meet different people and see different places, so music has been good to me”.

Alongside his travels he also appeared on the expresso show and radio stations to showcase his sound.  Through his music, he aims to uplift people’s spirits as well as encourage them.

Through my music, I want people to feel good about themselves. Through my music I want to leave a message of hope, to let them know that there is light at the end of the tunnel”.

Simon motivates the youth of Ocean View by saying:

Hold onto that hope. Don’t let your current situation get you down because you don’t know what the future holds. Believe in yourself, because if you are not going to then no one else is going to. Make use of the talent that God has given you.
